We supply precision straightedges from 3 feet to 16 feet long for inspection and alignment applications. Our standard precision steel straight edges are precision ground with ONE useable edge. The flatness and straightness specifications for steel straight edges range between 0.001 to 0.004 inch depending on the length of the unit. A print for each unit is available by clicking the PDF icon. The tolerances for the maximum allowable deviation over the length of the entire measuring  surface are shown in the chart below:

  Straight Edges with Certified Quality
Have you ever noticed how most of our competitors never mention what sort of quality they provide with their straight edges? We provide certification document for each precision straight edge. We will check your precision straight edge using a certified granite surface plate with traceability to NIST standards. Our inspection procedures check the flatness and straightness for each straight edge.

Sample Inspection Certificate

  Choose One or Two Edges
The above prices for standard steel straight edges include certification for only ONE edge. We cannot guarantee the quality of both edges of the straight edge unless we grind and certify both sides.  Aluminum parallel bars include two edges.

We can certify both edges for an additional charge of
$300.
In addition to the extra grinding and inspection time, this additional charge includes masking, cleaning tape residue, and applying rust preventative on the two unpainted edges. If you purchase this extra option the straight edge will include TWO useable edges that are straight, flat, and parallel within the tolerance specified. To add a second useable edge to your straight edge, look for this selection under optional cost items in our store.

Our standard straight edges cannot be used as a set of parallels. We consider the length, height and width dimensions to be nominal within the deviation allowed on the print. No two straight edges with the same part number will have exactly the same dimensions for height, width, or length unless this feature is special ordered for an additional cost.

Straight Edges Made from Durable Steel
Most of our standard precision straight edges are built from hot rolled steel that has not been heat treated. Hot rolled steel does not require annealing and the high temperature prevents stress from accumulating in the material which results in better dimensional stability than cold worked materials. Our units typically hold shape better as there is no residual memory effect from stresses caused by hardening. We achieve very close tolerances at competitive pricing. Most of these units were designed for careful inspection and used by professionals who know how to handle a precision tool. Unfortunately, even hardened steel will nick if dropped.

  Light Weight Aluminum Straight Edges
We also make standard precision straight edges for leveling applications that are made from Aluminum. These straight edges were designed to be used with precision machinist levels for rigging and machine installations.  These leveling straight edges include TWO useable edges. The ligher weight compensates for the extra width required to hold the base of the level and wear is not a factor for this application because the edge does not usually contact a rough surface.

Corrosion Protection Included on Straight Edges
Standard precision straight edges are normally painted on five sides to prevent corrosion. This leaves only one side to keep oiled. We can leave your unit unpainted but then you would have to oil all of the sides or it would rust. Then it would then be very slippery to pick up. The unpainted side is certified for the entire length of the unit. Standard straight edges from stock are usually painted the color grey.

Chamfers on Edges Included on Straight Edges
We normally chamfer the four edges on a straight edge to prevent cuts when handling. The standard straight edge includes lightly chamfer edges that measure (45º x .010")

Important Shipping Information

  Storing and Transporting Straight Edges
For best results straight edges should be stored fully supported on a qualified edge to reduce stress on the unit. When storing or transporting straight edges you should take care to prevent damage to the unit, by protecting the unit with effective packaging. Avoid contact with objects that can nick or bend the unit. Extreme temperature changes may change the shape of your unit. Clean and dry all straight edges before long term stowage to prevent corrosion. The qualified edge on some SE series straight edges is made with carbon steel and should oiled to prevent rust on non-painted surfaces. Paveflat and other straight edges made from aluminum or stainless steel; do not have to be oiled.

Under dry conditions, the original fiberboard packaging can be used to transport or store your straight edge. Many of our customers transport their straight edges to the job site inside of PVC pipe mounted on top of truck racks. While PVC pipe will prevent nicks to the unit, is does not prevent damage if the PVC pipe is bent. It is important to support the PVC pipe at multiple points to prevent bending. For straight edges over 6-foot long, pressure on the outside of the PVC pipe can deflect it enough to cause damage to the straight edge inside sometimes without any signs of damage to the outside PVC pipe. The best straight edge packaging is usually an oversize wooden box with handles. Unfortunately the best wooden boxes often are heavy and costly solutions.

  FAQ and Other Alternatives
Frequently asked questions include: Do I really need to lug around a heavy steel straight edge to check flatness and straightness? What about using Lasers? Isn't there something easier or cheaper out there? Why can't we check it with our CMM? Couldn't I just buy some ground flat stock and use it? Will aluminum straight edges work?  Frequently Asked Questions

  Applications for Precision Straight Edges
Precision straight edges are useful for and checking the flatness of surfaces and leveling machine tools. In most of these applications, the straight edge is used as a reference surface to check your part. With a straight edge you can track and isolate potential sources of error. The amount straightness deviation usually measured by inserting a feeler gauge between the part and the straight edge.   Our customers keep finding new and innovative uses in a wide range of industries. Our precision straight edges are being used for the following applications:
